Telstra boss named

The long search for a replacement for Telstra’s CEO Ziggy Switkowski ended yesterday with the announcement that Solomon Trujillo will take up the reins on July 1.

            Trujillo was until recently the CEO of wireless services provider Orange SA, and has also served as chairman and CEO of US West Communications. He is on the boards of Pepsi, Target, media company Gannett, and EDS.

 

Consulting head at UCMS

Business process partnering company UCMS has appointed Claude Walker managing director of UCMS Consulting. Prior to joining UCMS Walker had completed a number of consulting jobs for the company. Over the past 20 years he had worked for a number of other technology companies, including Pracom, Link Telecommunications, FileNet, and Computron Technologies.

 

New head for Hyro

Following the acquisition of ISM Consulting Asia/Pacific by Hyro (Rust Report, March 4, p4), Joseph Calavassy has been confirmed as CEO of Hyro. He had previously been acting CEO.

 

Kiwi company expands

Esphion, a New Zealand network security solutions provider, has expanded its Australian operation with the appointment of Robert Young as general manager of sales. He will build a dedicated Australian sales team.

            Young has spent 15 years selling technology in Europe and Australasia, and was most recently in the UK setting up a European operation for Engage. He has also worked for CommSoft, Ubix, Stellent, and Interwoven.

 

Kal Savi joins Siemens

Kal Savi has been appointed senior channel manager, enterprise, at Siemens Communications.

            Savi entered the communications sector with AT&T and was later spun off into the Lucent Technologies, when he worked in the US as Lucent’s account manager for News Limited. Savi returned to Australia to work for Sirocco Communications and was most recently with MCI.

 

PeopleSoft man for SAP

Ray Kloss has joined SAP Australia and New Zealand as executive manager of field marketing. He was previously PeopleSoft’s director of industry and product marketing for Japan and the Asia/Pacific region.

 

McDonald takes new chair

Jim McDonald has been appointed chairman of Australian company Mobilesoft. He will replace John Gillon, who will remain on the board as independent non-executive director.

            McDonald is well known around the Australian industry for his roles at IBM and CSC, and for his time as founding CEO of Amdahl in Australia and the Asia/Pacific region.

 

Wakeham joins Tele-IP

Rick Wakeham has been appointed national marketing manager of Australian company Tele-IP. He has previously held senior roles with Hutchison Telecommunications, Optus, and Intelematics, the joint venture between RACV and NRMA. He was most recently with Telstra.

 

Dowling expands

Dowling Consulting has appointed four new consultants.

*          Mike Andrews has joined from HP Consulting and Integration. He has also worked at Powerlan and Willow Plastics.

*          Fred Lorensini was previously with McMillan Shakespeare, and has also worked for Toll Holdings and Ansett.

*          John Wise has joined Dowling from KAZ Technology Services and has also worked for Pricewaterhouse Urwick.

*          Russell Murphy was previously with Software Engineering Australia.

 

Terry Shannon

US industry analyst Terry Shannon has passed away at his home in Texas after an illness.

            Somewhat in the mould of Hunter S Thompson, Shannon began producing a newsletter Shannon Knows DEC in 1992. Usually insightful and sometimes out-rageously funny, the newsletter was reshaped to follow DEC’s various incarnations, ultimately becoming Shannon Knows HPC.

            Terry made several trips to Australia and will be remembered by many of this country’s Digits.
